2001 USMS/Kast-A-Way Pool All Stars | 2001 USMS Pool All Americans
The "Stadio del Nuoto," Ricciane is a completely modern sports complex thanks to its up to date services and equipment including three pools: one covered and two open air. All of this can be found in idyllic surroundings of a large park just a few minutes from the sea and easily reached from both the motorway (A14 exit Riccione) and the airport at Miramare di Rimini (just 5 minutes). In summer the swimming pool is open to the public seven days a week from 10.00 to 18.00 including holidays. The complex is made up of a ten lane Olympic-size swimming pool (50m x 25m) and a diving pool which measures 24m x 18m and is 5m deep at all points. The diving pool has a diving tower with fixed diving boards at heights of 5m and 10m and approved springboards at heights of 1m and 3m.
These pools are surrounded by an area of park which is equipped for the welcome and comfort of the users of the pool. Sun beds and sunshades are available n the area around the pool. In the park, which surrounds the pool area, there are grass volleyball courts, shaded areas, stands with space for up to 2,000 spectators, and a sandy area for beach volleyball displays. There is also a friendly and efficient bar for refreshments.
The "Stadio del Nuoto" is a sports complex that meets all the necessary requirements for the holding of national and international meetings. In the past the complex has been host to a number of extremely important events such as the European Masters Swimming Championship, The World Military Championships of Swimming, Water Polo, and Diving, Nazionali Assoluti FIN, Italian Diving Championship FIN. Lanes may be booked in the complex, from June to September, for the purpose of courses, training groups with the possibility of special prices for Italian or foreign clubs and associations.
Bogan Park Recap -- May 18
Mostly a "senior" turnout for the Bogan Park SCY Development Meet on Saturday, May 18 in Georgia. This meet also served as the setting for the Gwinnett County Senior Olympics. Thanks to John Zeigler for making arrangements for this meet, which we hope to make an annual event. Thanks as well to Bill Pave for serving as meet referee.
Athens, Georgia, LC Recap -- June 1
Highest turnout yet at the 6th annual Classic City LC Meet, held at the UGA Natatorium on Saturday June 1 -- just shy of 100 swimmers. Georgia teams participating included Atlanta Rainbow Trout (ART), City of Atlanta Masters (CAMP), Classic City Masters (CCM), Dynamo Masters (DYNA), Fowler Fins (FINS), Georgia Killer Whales (GMKW), Swim Atlanta Masters (SAMS), Savannah Masters (SAVM), and Stingrays (RAYS). Top performances at the meet were the two world records set by Hugh Wilder of Palmetto Masters in the 55-59 age group. Thanks to meet director Ray Woller and all the Classic City Masters volunteers who helped to put on this meet. Next year's meet date is set for Saturday, June 7.
The Charge of the Chilled Brigade -- Fort Yargo -- May 3
Sunny skies, water temperature 74 degrees, expecting 90 swimmers for the first Savage Sawfish Open Water Swim. May 4: A cold front brings heavy rain and lightning from Alabama and the Carolinas to the coast, air temperature 55 degrees, winds gusting to 25 miles per hour, water temperature 72 degrees. Forty swimmers and 19 volunteers huddle in the pavilion for an hour until the race is rescheduled. May 5: Overcast skies, air temperature 60 degrees, moderate winds and water temperature 69 degrees. 55 swimmers start the race on time. First out of the water after a mile with a wetsuit is Kelly Rea, and Paul Allen leads the men. Without wetsuits are Maureen Meader and Greg Mohl. After swimming two miles in wetsuits finishing first is Catherine Fuss and Timothy Caputo. First after two miles in just a Speedo and a cap are Melissa Marcinkowski and Scott Frederick. The Mucky Duck is something I've (Carl House) been working on now and then for several years. It is a computer program meant to help inexperienced competitors set goals and plan for competition. It analyzes your times, estimates which you can improve, and estimates times for events you haven't swum. In order to help evaluate it, I've created reports for 60 swimmers who have 8 or more times in 2001 Top Ten. Needless to say, these are experienced competitors who don't really need it, but these are the people for whom times are available. It's real intent is to serve people who don't make Top Ten and who will use Top Ten times for setting their goals. Anyone who wishes to can ask for a report on their times. All one has to do is fill out the entry form.

Two Dixie Zone (Florida Gold Coast Swimmers) appeared on this list in their respective age groups: June Krauser (75-79) and Cav Cavanaugh (65-69).
Florida Gold Coast All-Americans making this list were Tracie Moll (35-39), June Krauser (70-74 and 75-79), George Schmidt (50-54), Joel Burns (55-59), Cav Cavanaugh (65-69) and Herb Kern (65-69).
They come mostly from California, But also from Florida, Kentucky, Colorado, Virginia, and Texas. More than 60 years separate the youngest and oldest, and they range in age from mid-20's to late-0's. They are newcomers and veterans, sprinters and distance swimmers. One has only been swimming eight years; others have been to the Olympics. All take their swimming seriously, but they don't want you to think they take it too seriously. These six women and six men comprise the 2001 Masters Swimmers of the Year.
The Dixie Zone had two women out of the six make this list. Flo Carr (75-79), a freestyle specialist from Sun City Center, FL, ended 2001 with eight new national records. Two important breakthrough swims came in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, when Carr became the first U.S. woman over 75 years to break 35 seconds in the 50 and 1:20 in the 100. She continued her winning ways in meters swimming, capturing two national titles in long course and another two in short course. All four triumphs came with national records.
June Krauser (70-74 and 75-79), known as the "Mother of Masters Swimming" is one of two outstanding women in the 75-79 age group honored this year. Krauer, who swims for Gold Coast Masters, has been a fixture on the Masters scene from the organization's inception and has participated in every single nationals since 1972. Now it looks like she'll be fixed in the record books for some time. In 2001 she earned 13 new world records and 27 number one rankings.
